The BERP was charted in 1886 mainly by Spanish immigrants residing in Argentina. Its capacity to overcome the 1891 banking crisis promptly raised public interest. Over its expansionary times,the BERP opened a number of branches across different provinces and even developed a notorious presence overseas, chiefly in Europe. The BERP became the most preeminent private bank in Argentina in terms of lending, deposits, capital and reserves. Nevertheless, the problems that it had been dragging on in the twenties triggered its collapse in the aftermath of the 1930 crisis. A combination of these facts called for a special program for the BERP within the framework of the 1935 monetary and banking reform. El presente trabajo busca describir la evolución de los primeros cincuenta años de actividad del Banco Español del Río de la Plata (BERP) a través de la documentación histórica y demás fuentes pertenecientes a los acervos bibliográficos y documentales de las Bibliotecas del Banco Central de la República Argentina. Creado en 1886 primariamente por inmigrantes españoles radicados en Argentina, el BERP prontamente acaparó la atención del público por su capacidad para sortear la crisis bancaria de 1891. En su etapa de expansión llevó adelante un gran despliegue de sucursales en el interior del país, y lo que fuera más llamativo, una interesante presencia en el exterior, principalmente en Europa. Si bien llegó a ser el banco privado argentino más importante en cuanto a préstamos, depósitos, capital y reservas, algunos problemas que arrastraba en la década de 1920 terminaron de causar implosión en los años que siguieron a la crisis del 30’. La conjunción de estos hechos desembocaría en que la reforma monetaria y bancaria de 1935 incluyera un plan especial para el BERP. Centro de Estudios Históricos “Prof. Carlos S. A.
