In this sense, history has contributed to the understanding of the relationship between natural and social systems through its specific conceptual and methodological baggage. Nowadays, comprehensive and coordinated water resources management at the basin level is developing and shows many difficulties that are closely linked to historical models of management. We aim to identify some general methodological considerations on the environmental history of rivers, specifically in our case study on the river Los Sauces water system. Furthermore, we show how these considerations are deeply linked with the selection and treatment of the documentary sources that we examined. We believe that the achievement of both objectives can effectivelycontribute to the diachronic study of society / natural water systems relationship in the province of Córdoba and could encourage the development of these kind of investigations. En las últimas décadas, la cuestión ambiental ha ganado mayor interés entre agentes sociales de diversas procedencias. La historia también fue aportando a la comprensión de la relación entre sistemas naturales y sistemas sociales mediante el bagaje conceptual y metodológico propio. Actualmente, la gestión de los recursos hídricos a nivel de cuenca está en pleno desarrollo y presenta una serie de dificultades estrechamente vinculadas a los modelos de gestión históricos y a la relación de la sociedad con ese recurso. En nuestro estudio nos proponemos señalar algunas consideraciones metodológicas generales sobre la historia ambiental de los ríos que hemos hecho operables en nuestras investigaciones sobre el sistema del río de Los Sauces. Por otro lado, queremos mostrar de qué forma lo antedicho se vinculó profundamente con la elección y tratamiento de las fuentes documentales que hemos examinado. Creemos que la concreción de ambos objetivos puede contribuir de manera eficaz al estudio diacrónico de la relación sociedad/sistemas hídricos naturales en la provincia de Córdoba e incentivar el desarrollo de investigaciones con esa orientación.
