It focuses on a file labeled: “Society of Beneficence. Extraordinary services 1823-1900”, which contains documents that demonstrate the assistance function of this agency and its participation in the labor placement of indigenous people in a period of military campaigns of Pampa, Norpatagonia and Chaco, between 1878-1885. This corpus allows us to explore a phenomenon scarcely considered by the studies of the world of urban work at the end of the century. This article identifies the specific dimensions and characteristics of such labor relations in that specific conjuncture. It investigates the affected populations and replenishes contextual elements in order to consider the connections between guardianship and work, as well as the relations of dependence and subordination that contributed to the processes of ethnicization of these populations in the city. Este artículo se organiza a partir de la presentación y análisis de un corpus documental perteneciente al fondo Instituciones de la Sociedad de Beneficencia y Asistencia Social, que se encuentra bajo la guarda del Archivo General de la Nación (AGN). Se trata de la indagación de un legajo que se rotula: “Sociedad de Beneficencia. Servicios extraordinarios. 1823-1900”. Contiene documentos que evidencian la función asistencial de esta agencia y su participación en la entrega y colocación de indígenas en el marco de las campañas militares de Pampa, Norpatagonia y Chaco, entre 1878-1885. El acercamiento a este corpus permite explorar un fenómeno escasamente considerado por los estudios del mundo del trabajo urbano finisecular. Reconstruye las dimensiones y las características que asumió en esa coyuntura específica. Indaga en las poblaciones afectadas y repone elementos contextuales que permiten pensar la tutela y el trabajo, la existencia de relaciones de dependencia y subordinación que contribuyeron a los procesos de etnización de esas poblaciones en la ciudad.
