The thesis that I want to present here is that it is necessary to “deinstrumentalize” school objects, that is, to stop thinking of them as mere historical sources for understanding the past and recognize them as agency-objects that intervene in the production of the school experience. Thus, approaching the past of the school, from this perspective, supposes making school material culture a research problem, taking school objects not as closed, defined cultural products, clothed in one time-another, but as producers, as points of action that unfold generating new meanings and constituting subjectivities. Understood in this way, school objects make one do, make one think, make one say and make one feel, due to what in research practice in the field of the history of education one does not talk about them, but rather with them, to situate at its center the school history of each subject. This means asking new questions to school objects, (re)constructing their trajectories -a biography of school objects-, recognizing their materials, shapes and textures and establishing the networks of meaning and contradiction in which they are inscribed, in addition to their meanings and the practices and knowledge associated with them. El propósito de este texto es plantear algunas notas conceptuales y metodológicas que posibiliten redefinir el uso de la cultura material escolar en la práctica investigativa en el campo de la historia de la educación. La tesis que quiero presentar aquí es que resulta necesario “desinstrumentalizar” los objetos de la escuela, esto es, dejar de pensarlos como meras fuentes históricas para la comprensión del pasado y reconocerlos como objetos-agencia que intervienen en la producción de la experiencia escolar. Así, abordar el pasado de la escuela, desde esta perspectiva, supone hacer de la cultura material escolar un problema de investigación, tomar los objetos escolares no como productos culturales cerrados, definidos, revestidos de un tiempo-otro, sino como productores, como puntos de acción que se despliegan generando nuevos sentidos y constituyendo subjetividades. Entendidos de esta manera, los objetos escolares hacen hacer, hacen pensar, hacen decir y hacen sentir, por lo que, en la práctica investigativa en el campo de la historia de la educación, no se habla de ellos, sino con ellos, para situar en su centro la historia escolar de cada sujeto. Lo anterior supone hacerles nuevas preguntas a los objetos escolares, (re)construir sus trayectorias –una biografía de los objetos escolares–, reconocer sus materiales, formas y texturas, y establecer las redes de sentido y de contrasentido en las cuales se inscriben, además de sus significados y las prácticas y saberes asociados a ellos.
