In contrast to the epics that characterized the development of national heroes in other cultures, that specific literary and cultural void was filled in Mexico by popular poetry. This work highlights the crucial role played by authors such as Guillermo Prieto, writer of El romancero nacional, as well as other numerous and equally fundamental contributions from unknown authors. Through a documented analysis, it is revealed how these poetic expressions not only conveyed the ideals of independence, but also shaped the collective perception of heroes and the Mexican national identity, in such a way that they consolidated an invaluable cultural legacy. la poesía popular de la independencia emerge como un elemento central en la construcción de héroes nacionales y en la formación de la identidad nacional de México. En contraste con las epopeyas que caracterizaron la formación de héroes nacionales en otras culturas, la poesía popular mexicana llenó ese vacío literario y cultural específico. Este estudio destaca el papel crucial desempeñado por Guillermo Prieto, autor de El romancero nacional, así como de un sinnúmero de otras contribuciones de autoría desconocida igual de fundamentales. A través de un análisis documentado, se revela cómo estas expresiones poéticas no solo transmitieron los ideales de la independencia, sino que también modelaron la percepción colectiva de los héroes y de la identidad nacional mexicana, de manera que consolidaron un legado cultural invaluable.
