However, there are no studies on the content of plastic particles in herbal teas or within (accumulation) of lichens used to make herbal teas. In the present work, we recorded and quantified, for the first time, the content of mesoand microplastic particles in the infusions and thalli (accumulated) of Usnea amblyoclada, a lichen used in the preparation of “stone tea”. The thalli used came from three herbalist’s shops in Greater Buenos Aires (GBA, Buenos Aires, Argentina). We made three infusions of 250 ml per herbalist’s shop. Following recommendations, each infusion was brought to 100ºC (for 1 minute). The infusions and the digested liquid material (hydrogen peroxide method) were filtered through a 1 μm filter (pore). The number, length and shape of plastic particles were recorded (a total of 90 particles were recorded). An average of 3.56 cumulative plastic particles and 6.44 in infusions were recorded. The polymers identified were: nylon 6, polyester and polypropylene. Plastic particles recorded an average length of 3822.76 μm; with a higher frequency of translucent (colourless) particles. Here we record for the first time the ability of U. amblyoclada to accumulate plastic particles. A frequent consumer of stone tea implies an intake of more than 1000 plastic particles per year. Further studies on the collection and storage processes of stone tea should be carried out.

La presencia de meso y micropartículas plásticas es casi omnipresente en los productos de consumo humano, incluyendo infusiones. Algunas especies de líquenes son frecuentemente comercializadas para la preparación de infusiones. Sin embargo, no existen estudios sobre el contenido de partículas plásticas en las infusiones ni dentro (acumulación) de los líquenes utilizados para hacer dichas infusiones. En el presente trabajo registramos y cuantificamos, por primera vez, el contenido de meso y micropartículas plásticas en las infusiones y talos (acumuladas) de Usnea amblyoclada, liquen empleado en la preparación del té “yerba de la piedra”. Los talos utilizados provienen de tres herboristerías del Gran Buenos Aires (GBA, Buenos Aires, Argentina). Realizamos tres infusiones de 250 ml por herboristería. Siguiendo recomendaciones, cada infusión fue llevada a 100 º C (por 1 minuto). Las infusiones y el material liquénico digerido (método del peróxido de hidrógeno) se filtraron por filtro de 1 μm (poro). Se observaron: número, largo y forma de las partículas plásticas (se reconoció un total de 90 partículas). Se registró un promedio de 3,56 partículas plásticas acumuladas y 6,44 en las infusiones. Los polímeros identificados fueron: nylon 6, poliéster y polipropileno. Las partículas plásticas midieron un largo promedio de 3822,76 μm; con mayor frecuencia de partículas traslucidas (sin color). Aquí relevamos por primera vez la capacidad de U. amblyoclada para acumular partículas plásticas. Un consumidor frecuente de té de la piedra implica una ingesta de más de 1000 partículas plásticas por año. Estudios más profundos sobre los procesos de recolección y almacenaje del té de la piedra deberán llevarse a cabo. A presença de partículas meso e microplásticas é quase onipresente em produtos para consumo humano, incluindo infusões. Algumas espécies de líquenes são frequentemente comercializadas para a preparação de infusões. No entanto, não existem estudos sobre o conteúdo de partículas plásticas nas infusões ou dentro (acúmulo) dos líquenes utilizados para fazer essas infusões. No presente trabalho registamos e quantificamos, pela primeira vez, o conteúdo de micropartículas meso e plásticas nas infusões e talos (acumulados) de Usnea amblyoclada, um líquen utilizado na preparação do chá de “yerba de la piedra”. Os caules utilizados provêm de três lojas de ervas da Grande Buenos Aires (GBA, Buenos Aires, Argentina). Fazemos três infusões de 250 ml por fitoterapeuta. Seguindo as recomendações, cada infusão foi levada a 100 ºC (por 1 minuto). As infusões e o material líquen digerido (método do peróxido de hidrogênio) foram filtrados através de um filtro de 1 μm (poro). Foram observados: número, comprimento e formato das partículas plásticas (foram reconhecidas um total de 90 partículas). Foram registradas em média 3,56 partículas plásticas acumuladas e 6,44 nas infusões. Os polímeros identificados foram: nylon 6, poliéster e polipropileno. As partículas de plástico mediam um comprimento médio de 3.822,76 μm; com maior frequência de partículas translúcidas (sem cor). Aqui revelamos pela primeira vez a capacidade de U. amblyoclada de acumular partículas plásticas. Um consumo frequente de chá com caroço implica uma ingestão de mais de 1000 partículas de plástico por ano. Estudos mais aprofundados sobre os processos de coleta e armazenamento do chá de caroço devem ser realizados.
