Atendiendo a los caracteres que se utilizan en sistemática para la separación de los taxones y según el criterio seguido por diferentes autores, el género Pertusaria DC. presenta ciertas controversias respecto al número de especies, variedades, subespecies y formas que en él se incluyen. De la combinación de todos los rasgos químicos y morfológicos y anatómicos considerados en este género, se obtiene un gran número teórico de taxones, próximo a los 1550, reflejados en este trabajo.
