description Este artigo examina a contribuição de escritores ensaístas para a valorização da coletividade brasileira entre os anos de 1930 a 1960, substituindo a preocupação com a degenerescência de um povo de mestiços, pela objetivação da pesada herança histórica deixada pelo regime escravocrata das grandes plantações coloniais. Inicialmente é estudada a obra de Euclides da Cunha -Os Sertões- onde o significado do massacre de Canudos é amplificado por sua concepção como vinculado à liquidação do embrião de nova raça forte originada do cruzamento de brancos com índios. O estudo de três das obras fundamentais dos anos 30-40- Casa-grande e senzala de Gilberto Freyre, Raízes do Brasil de Sérgio Buarque de Holanda e Formação do Brasil Contemporâneo de Caio Prado Jr.- permite demonstrar como se objetivou a matriz social da mestiçagem no Brasil e o pesado legado deixado pela escravatura nos modos de funcionamento do espaço político, do campo econômico e na recriação das hierarquias sociais; sobretudo pelo exame desse legado sobre a “psicologia íntima” dos Brasileiros. São assim explicitados os desafios a serem enfrentados para consolidar a nação como uma democracia moderna e assegurar seu futuro autônomo.Palabras clave: Brasil; intelectuales; mesuizaje; cultura nacionalAbstractThis article investigates the contributions of intellectuals to the valorization of the Brazilian community during the years 1930-1940; substituting the objectivation of the heavy historical legacy inherited from the slavery system of large colonialplantations to the study of a miscigenated population. First this article reviews the book Os sertoes by Euclides da Cunha, where the signification of the war against the Canudos village is deciphered in terms of elimination of an emergingrace resulting from the cross-breeding of the Whites and the Indians. Then the study of three of the main works of the years 30-40, Casa Grande e Senzala (Masters and Slaves) by Gilberto Freyre, Raizes do Brasil (Brazil’Roots)by Sérgio Buarque de Hollanda and Formaçao do Brasil contemporâneo ( The making of contemporary Brazil) intends to explain how the social matrix of miscegenation in Brazil and the strong legacy of the slavery system having imprinted the ways of functioning of the political space, the economic field and the rebuilding of social hierarchies have been objectified. The author thus explicits the challenges the nation has to face in order to preserve itself and to build the future.Keywords: Brazil; intellectuals;miscegenation, national culture
