description The current village of Cochinoca is located in the central part of the Puna region in Jujuy, Argentina. It was founded at the beginning of the XVII century and it was part of the Casabindo-Cochinoca  encomienda which was very important during colonial times.  Over the last years, extensive research into the Occupational History of Cochinoca and adjacent locations has been carried out. In this paper, evidence from prehispanic periods are compared to evidence from stages after the arrival of the Spaniards to the region. All this evidence provides a favorable context to discuss the ancient inhabitants’ changes and continuities in their everyday practices and rituals. Architecture, pottery and rock art representations are key elements in this work. Each one was analyzed on the basis of specific methodology in each particular case. Historiographic data and references to oral history were taken into account in order to contextualize the periods related to the European occupation in the area.
