description The pampean frontier was an arena of multiple commercial, social, and cultural interactions between Indian people and Creole society. This paper presents the study of a “friendly Indian” tribe that was located in the area of Tapalque, Azul and Olavarría from ca. 1832 to 1875, in the framework of inter-ethnic agreements that established the periodic provision of various consumption goods by the Government, including food rations, livestock and alcoholic beverages. On the basis of the information provided through zooarchaeological study of Arroyo Nievas 2 site plus a varied set of firsthand contemporary written sources, the strategies of exploitation and consumption of both wild and domestic animals by such Indians are analyzed, discussing the stereotyped idea of a diet almost exclusively focused on horse meat. On the one hand, the paper evaluates the contribution of local fauna to the diet. On the other hand, it also highlights the importance of the cattle and horses within indigenous economy as suppliers, not only of meat, but also of goods of high commercial value such as their skins
