description This essay links rock art styles in the Atacama region with different forms of social interactions from the LateArchaic to the Colonial Period (ca. 3000 BC-1800 AD). Based on available archaeological evidence and a longresearch program, this paper argues that rock art styles not only expressed local identities associated withparticular intercultural relationships, but moreover, they allowed the formation of a set of symbolic practices related to the social and economic imperatives of each period. This is a perspective that considers images and their surroundings as repositories and transmitters of knowledge –strategies for the validation of plurality–entangled with social aspirations and needs that structured life in the region and locality.
