description Once the last dictatorship was over, the Bicameral Commission –constituted in the province of Tucumán in 1984 to investigate the crimes committed during state terrorism– concluded that the workers’ movement had been one of the main targets of the repressive offensive. This statement engaged in direct conflict with the “theory” of the two demons, which at that precise moment began to spread as an explanation about the causes of the coup d’etat that took place in March 24, 1976.In this paper our intent is to reconstruct the sugar worker victims as a collective. By doing this, we will demonstrate there was a plan to discipline the whole working class and decapitate the grassroots unions and the Tucuman Workers’ Federation of theSugar Industry (FOTIA). Likewise, we reflect on the methodological difficulties in the reconstruction of this group of victims. This process leads to rethinking labour relations in the sugar industry as a whole, the concealment and destruction of historical documents of that period, and the dispersion and fragmentation of any available sources. The results of this investigation empirically strengthen that statement originally made by the Bicameral Commission and, at the same time, expose the falsity of the “theory” of the two demons.
