description We present new evidence on the evolution of the populations that inhabited the territory of Cordoba in pre Hispanic times, through the analysis of mitochondrial DNA of human remains from different archaeological, geographical, and temporal procedence. The sample included 53 individuals of which 48 could be genotyped for one of the four American founding mitochondrial haplogroups. All the remains analyzed (except one) were previously dated by AMS, presenting a range of age between 4525 ± 20 and 345 ± 20 years BP. The results show significant genetic differences between the groups that inhabited the mountains and those who lived in the plains. This differentiation, characterized by a strong increase in the frequency of haplogroup B, would have emerged around the 1200 BP, significantly modifying the gene pool of the ancient population, which presents a strong predominance of haplogroup C. It is also observed by this time an increase in the frequency of haplogroup A in the plains, but not changing substantially the genetic profile of the ancient population. A high relative prevalence of haplogroups C and D in the plains, as occur in Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego populations, remains, in a suggestive and difficult to unravel way, in the contemporary population of the province of Cordoba, suggesting a possible common origin with the inhabitants of the southern extreme of the continent.
