description In this paper we deal with the intentional breakage of objects, more precisely with intentional breakage of flaked stone tools. In the first place we present a brief characterization of different types of intentional fractures on lithics and of those traits that allows their recognition. This characterization is based on a synthesis of the descriptions given by other researchers and our own experimental results. The deliberate breakage of objects has been given different explanations according to the specific contexts in which it was recognized and to the objects on which it was performed. It has been linked to different technological strategies and it has been also considered as evidence of ritual practices. Finally, we present two case studies of the Pampean Region with intentional breakage on stone tools.
