description |
The aim of this article is to build a socio-political profile of individuals who, in the context of the US intervention in Mexico (1846-1849), integrated the Mexican National Guard. A particular emphasis is placed in the case of Mexico City’s guards, which rather than the Mexican Army, were the ones that truly lead the Battle of Churubusco fought on August 20th, 1847. This article acquires relevance if we consider that the historiography of this war tends to minimize civilian participation, while assuming the Mexican Army’s leadership as the real defense against the US expansionist ambitions.
Moreover, the article attempts to give a face to the more than 700 anonymous combatants “defenders of Churubusco”, mostly civilians who carried out the historic defense of Churubusco against the whims of historiography and beyond the few names that stand out in this important Battle. Thus, on this occasion, we will try to give voice to Jose Maria Gonzales, one of the men to whom the “Monument of the Fallen”, located at the Battle site, is dedicated, although very little is known. |
