Postpartum and lactating women experience neurobiological and psychosocial changes manifest in cognitive mnesic variations. Serial-position effect is observed when a series of items is learned. The words of the beginning and the end of a list are remembered more frequently than those from the medium (primacy and recency effect), which reflect the operation of two independent memory systems: long-term and short-term memory term. In addition, recent research suggests that adiposity may have a negative association with cognitive performance.
With the aim of analyzing the serial-position effects in relation to anthropometric measurements of lactating women from Córdoba, Argentina, during 2016-2019, the performance in the Auditory-Verbal Learning test of Rey of 68 participants was studied.
Immediate recall (IR), learning index (LI), forgetfulness index (FI), percentage of forgetfulness (% F), primacy index (P), recency index (R), total hit rate ( THR), primacy hit rate (PHR), medium hit rate (MHR), recency hit rate (RHR) and memory efficiency index (MEI). In addition, percentage of body fat (% BF) and body mass index (BMI) were quantified and grouped according to World Health Organization recommendations. The Van Der Waerden method was used for statistical comparisons.
Regarding % BF, women with recommended values showed higher scores in the IR (48.77 (10.33) vs 42.55 (10.25), p = 0.001), P (0.68 (0, 16) vs. 0.61 (0.14), p = 0.005), R (0.71 (0.16) vs. 0.65 (0.15), p = 0.008), THR (0.61 (0, 11) vs. 0.55 (0.11), p = 0.003), PHR (0.65 (0.13) vs. 0.59 (0.12), p = 0.012), MHR (0.56 (0, 16) vs. 0.50 (0.15), p = 0.027) and RHR (0.66 (0.15) vs. 0.62 (0.13), p = 0.039). When analzying BMI, only significant differences were found in the IR (47.59 (10.39) vs 43.42 (10.88), p = 0.022), P (0.68 (0.16) vs 0, 61 (0.14), p = 0.016) and PHR (0.64 (0.13) vs. 0.59 (0.12), p = 0.028).
In conclusion, healthy values of weight and body fat may have positive effects on memory functioning in lactating women, favoring adaptive processes that underlie this vital stage |
