description The starting point of this work is a comparison between the books Barroco, by Severo Sarduy, and La cultura del Barroco , by José Antonio Maravall, both published almost the same year (1975 and 1974 respectively). Within this context, the article evaluates the scope of interpretations of the 17th century proposed by Sarduy. As a hypothesis, the text states that most of those interpretations are historically unfounded. But at the same time, and as a second hypothesis, it is proposed that this error is the basis from which Sarduy composes his anachronistic conception of neo-baroque. After demonstrating this proposal, the text analyzes the scope of this anachronic proposal to understand both the seventeenth century and the present.
