Contributions to the interpretation of the activities carried out in surface sites through functional analysis

The aim of this paper is to interpret the activities carried out by hunter-gatherer groups during the Late Holocene in surface contexts located in the upper basin of Tapalqué creek (province of Buenos Aires, Argentina). Since the material evidence consists almost exclusively of lithic materials, use...

Since the material evidence consists almost exclusively of lithic materials, use-wear analysis was performed on tools and flakes with natural edges. The proposed methodology allows discussing some aspects related to the integrity of the surface assemblages and the context of use of lithic materials. The results allowed us to identify different degrees and types of alteration on surface contexts, which were related to the depositional environment, the time of exposure to weather conditions and the raw material used. Also, we emphasize the identification of micro-polish in surface materials which are linked to the processing of different resources (leather, wood, plant, etc.). In sum, this study enabled us to expand the knowledge of the production activities developed in such contexts and allowed corroborating that Laguna La Barrancosa 2 site was a multiple activity locus, functionality inferred from other lines of evidence.
