Identity made the figure of the gaucho as a social-outcast until his disappearance, which becomes the paradigm of national opposition to immigrants perceived by the elites of that time as an anarchic factor and a threat to social harmony. Thus, it is proposed to develop in this essay relates not so much with the new feature provided with the gaucho culture during the Centennial but with aspects for understanding the effectiveness of a typical institutional representation naturalizes itself as opposed to the alien that is projected into our present, to the point of making the text of Hernandez in the most important work of literature in Argentina and, therefore, a required reading in our culture. This fact is connected with another problem that we will also consider:  the tensions involved in the processes of production, reception and legitimation in the literature, mainly in those authors in where there is a relationship of alienation with respect to our language mother. Como sostiene Altamirano en “La fundación de la literatura argentina”, el debate instalado en el Centenario sobre el valor del Martín Fierro de Hernández señala una problemática intelectual que excede el ámbito de las letras y que termina por construir una identidad nacional cuya legitimidad se encontraba en el pasado pero que proyectaba su significado sobre ese presente e incluso, hacia el futuro. Identidad formulada sobre la figura del gaucho como tipo social marginado hasta su desaparición que deviene en paradigma de lo nacional por oposición a los inmigrantes percibidos por las elites dirigentes de ese momento como un factor anárquico y una amenaza para la convivencia social. Así, lo que se propone desarrollar en el presente ensayo guarda relación no tanto con la nueva función cultural dotada al gaucho durante el Centenario sino más bien con aspectos que permiten entender la eficacia de una operación típicamente institucional que naturaliza una representación de lo propio por oposición a lo ajeno que se proyecta hasta nuestro presente, a punto tal de tornar al texto de Hernández en la obra más importante de la literatura argentina y, por lo mismo, en una lectura obligatoria dentro de nuestra cultura. Hecho que se conecta con otro problema sobre el que también vamos a reflexionar:  las tensiones que intervienen en los procesos de producción, recepción y legitimación en la literatura, principalmente, en aquellos autores en donde se percibe una relación de extrañeza con respecto a nuestra lengua madre.
