description This paper deals with the approach to Human Rights issue in postdictatorial times by political weekly El Periodista de Buenos Aires, published from 1984, in its early steps. We analyze the coverage of the ending of activities, the delivery of the Executive Power-created Comisión Nacional sobre la Desaparición de Personas (CONADEP) report and the later launch of the book Nunca Más. Results of the research include the editorial stance about Human Rights, divided between two aspects. First, its support to the CONADEP, demonstrated in the abridged transcription of the Comisión press reports and by the interviewing of core members. Secondly, EP at the same time was responsive to moderate fractions of Human Rights Movement that were critical of the official strategies to research and legal processing of the crimes of State terror during the military dictatorship (1976-1983), and additionally, to the creation, institutional responsibilities and final outcomes of the labor of the Comisión. Also, it is concluded that the diffusion by the magazine of an unofficial list of perpetrators, not included in final report of CONADEP, led to a public controversy with the government, and permitted EP to defend itself based on its role as a media. Also to concentrate readers’ attention on ecclesiastical complicity with the dictatorship, as a part of civil participation in political repression. Finally, the critical review of the official launching of Nunca Más book allowed EP to share the questionings to the Government sphere from Human Rights organizations in face of their hesitant specific policies.

Este artículo aborda el tratamiento de la cuestión de los derechos humanos durante la postdictadura por parte del semanario político El Periodista de Buenos Aires, aparecido en 1984, en su etapa inicial. Analizamos su cobertura de la culminación de actividades y presentación del informe de la Comisión Nacional sobre la Desaparición de Personas (en adelante, CONADEP o Comisión) y del lanzamiento del libro Nunca Más. Entre los resultados alcanzados se cuenta la reconstrucción de su posición editorial en la materia, escindido en dos planos. Por una parte, su respaldo a la CONADEP, expresado en la reproducción condensada de sus resultados y en reportajes a sus integrantes. Por otra, la simultánea receptividad a sectores moderados del movimiento de derechos humanos, que sostenían una postura de apoyo crítico a la estrategia oficial de pesquisa y judicialización de los crímenes del terrorismo de Estado y por extensión a aspectos de la creación, responsabilidades y resultados de la Comisión. Asimismo, se concluye que la difusión de una lista de represores omitida en el informe de la Comisión y la polémica subsiguiente con el gobierno nacional permitió a la revista defender su rol periodístico y concentrar atención en la complicidad eclesiástica con la dictadura, como parte de la participación civil en la represión. Por último, la cobertura crítica de la presentación oficial del libro Nunca Más permitió a EP acompañar los cuestionamientos de los organismos a la actitud timorata del gobierno en sus políticas de derechos humanos Facultad de Filosofía y Humanidades.
