The personification of this phenomenon is crucial in the context of the epic genre. This literary genre claims the administration of the character's reputation as one of its primary functions. The characters act according to Fame (i.e. their reputation, both immediate and subsequent), which appears not only mentioned and described but also active within the story. But the episode can also be read as a metaliterary device. The inclusion of this creature made of words converts the role of the narrative machinery deployed by the author in the story's central theme. This is to such an extent that numerous in connection to the organization of the discourse are exposed as a means to exercise control, impose a particular view of reality, and establish the scales of values. El celebérrimo monstruo alado del cuarto libro de Eneida es prosopopeya del rumor, i.e. el discurso humano en circulación, de origen indetectable y difusión incontrolable. La personificación de un fenómeno de tales características cobra  una relevancia crucial en el marco de la épica, género literario que reivindica la administración de la reputación de los personajes como una de sus funciones primordiales. En tanto los personajes actúan en función de Fama, i.e. su reputación (tanto la inmediata como la ulterior), y ésta aparece no solo mencionada y descripta, sino también activa dentro del relato, resulta pertinente considerar la dimensión metaliteraria del episodio. En consecuencia, este trabajo explora la hipótesis de que la inclusión de este portento hecho de palabras, que condiciona y dinamiza las acciones de los personajes, tematiza el rol de la maquinaria narrativa desplegada por el autor, de modo tal que queda en evidencia una serie de aspectos relacionados con la organización del discurso como medio para ejercer control, imponer una mirada particular de la realidad o erigir escalas de valores.
