description In this paper we analyse how the collections of human remains in the Museo de La Plata (Argentina) were intervened, identified, classified, documented, exhibited and stored between the last years of the 19th century and the 1940s. The analysis of archives and publications, the composition of bone assemblages, the storage spaces and the osteological characteristics allow us to state, firstly, that the anatomical criterion was privileged, but not the only one. Thus, collections of skulls, pelvises, long bones, skeletons, and formalin preparations were made, sometimes subdivided by geographical region. Secondly, the exhibition incorporated rearrangements determined by museum curators and their research interests. Thirdly, many skulls and skeletons were identified and referenced, sometimes as the product of vague memories, and then reordered as a result of the exhibition and research. Finally, we discuss how these practices impact in the restitutions of human remains to indigenous people.

En este trabajo analizamos cómo en el Museo de La Plata (Argentina) las colecciones de restos humanos fueron intervenidas, identificadas, clasificadas, documentadas, exhibidas y guardadas entre los últimos años del siglo XIX y hasta la década de 1940. El análisis de archivos y publicaciones, la composición de los conjuntos óseos, los espacios de guarda y las características osteológicas permite afirmar, en primer lugar, que el criterio anatómico fue el privilegiado, pero no el único. Así se hicieron colecciones de cráneos, pelvis, huesos largos, esqueletos y preparados en formol, subdivididos a veces por regiones geográficas. En segundo lugar, la exhibición incorporó reordenamientos determinados por los curadores del museo y sus intereses de investigación, más que por políticas institucionales o intereses estatales. En tercer lugar, muchos cráneos y esqueletos fueron identificados y referenciados a veces como producto de memorias vagas u olvidos; luego, reordenados como resultado de la exhibición e investigación. Discutimos el impacto que estas prácticas tienen actualmente en los procesos de restitución a los pueblos indígenas. Neste trabalho analisamos como no Museu de La Plata (Argentina) as coleções de restos humanos foram intervencionadas, identificadas, classificadas, documentadas, expostas e armazenadas entre os últimos anos do século XIX e até a década de 1940. A análise de arquivos e publicações, a composição dos conjuntos ósseos, os espaços de guarda e as características osteológicas permitem afirmar, em primeiro lugar, que o critério anatômico foi o privilegiado, mas não o único. Assim, foram feitas coleções de crânios, pelve, ossos longos, esqueletos e preparações de formalina, às vezes subdivididas por região geográfica. Em segundo lugar, a exposição incorporou rearranjos determinados pelos curadores do museu e seus interesses de pesquisa, e não por políticas institucionais ou interesses estatais. Terceiro, muitos crânios e esqueletos foram identificados e referenciados, às vezes como produto de memórias vagas ou esquecimento; posteriormente, reordenado como resultado da exposição e pesquisa.
