All this, from the integrating perspective among the psychological, didactic and sociological dimensions that are outlined in an approach to the formation in this modality in the context of Ecuadorian universities. Criteria are provided for each of these dimensions and how they impact and are present in the distance postgraduate process. Correspondingly, limitations of professionals for access, permanence and completion of their postgraduate training are outlined. Such limitations show the inadequacies in the process of social relevance by not offering answers to massive and heterogeneous demands of professional improvement. Este artículo discurre sobre la educación de posgrado a distancia en función de la autogestión para el aprendizaje y el valor del trabajo independiente desde una perspectiva integral que contempla las dimensiones psicológica, didáctica y sociológica en el contexto particularizado de las universidades ecuatorianas. Se aportan criterios caracterizadores de cada una de estas dimensiones y se analiza cómo impactan y están presentes en el postgrado a distancia. En correspondencia, se esbozan las limitaciones de los profesionales para el acceso, permanencia y culminación de su formación de posgrado; lo cual expresa las insuficiencias en el proceso de pertinencia social, al no ofrecer respuestas a exigencias masivas y heterogéneas de la superación profesional.
