Extension policy, which is part of education policy, should aim at meeting the demands of a complex and globalized society in the collaborative construction of knowledge and its extension. It is essential that there is a dialogical, communicational and dynamic relationship between both. The relationships between university and society involve their organizations and institutions, as well as different types of appraisal around university, knowledge and the relationship established between it and the different sectors of society involved. It is worth mentioning that the notion of university outreach is closely related to how university defines itself and how it conceives its relationship with society. The analysis of these characteristic components makes it possible to visualize the different levels and directions assumed by the university-society interaction. All this entails the need for participating teachers with ethical and social commitment to build bridges between both institutions as a whole, enriching the dialogue and knowledge exchange. In our view, the classroom is the most appropriate place to generate the deepest and more meaningful actions regarding university-community engagement, it being a relevant and necessary process. We consider that the classroom constitutes the genesis, the first space for building up the dialogic relationship and the community outreach function. La función social de la universidad está basada en la relación de docencia, investigación y extensión. La política extensionista que forma parte de la política educacional, debe tener como objetivo responder a las demandas de una sociedad compleja y globalizada en la construcción de saberes y en la extensión de los mismos. Es imprescindible que exista una relación dialógica, comunicacional y dinámica entre ambas. Las relaciones de la Universidad con la sociedad,  sus organizaciones e instituciones, así como diferentes valoraciones en torno a la universidad, al saber y a la relación que se establece entre ésta y los diferentes sectores de la sociedad involucrados. Vale decir que la definición que se realice de la extensión universitaria, está íntimamente relacionada con la definición que la universidad realice de sí misma y de cómo conciba su relación con la sociedad. El análisis de estos componentes característicos posibilita visualizar los distintos niveles y direccionalidades que asume la interacción universidad-sociedad. Todo esto conlleva la necesidad de docentes participativos con compromiso ético y social para construir puentes entre ambas instituciones en su conjunto, enriqueciendo el diálogo y el intercambio de saberes. El espacio áulico es el más propicio a nuestro criterio para generar las acciones más profundas y con contenido significativo respecto a la extensión de la universidad a la sociedad y viceversa, siendo un proceso todo relevante y necesario. Consideramos que el aula constituye la génesis, el primer espacio de construcción de la relación dialógica y de la construcción de la función extensionista.
