Within this context, the article evaluates the scope of interpretations of the 17th century proposed by Sarduy. As a hypothesis, the text states that most of those interpretations are historically unfounded. But at the same time, and as a second hypothesis, it is proposed that this error is the basis from which Sarduy composes his anachronistic conception of neo-baroque. After demonstrating this proposal, the text analyzes the scope of this anachronic proposal to understand both the seventeenth century and the present. El punto de partida de este trabajo es una comparación entre los libros Barroco de Severo Sarduy y La cultura del barroco de José Antonio Maravall, publicados ambos casi el mismo año (1975 y 1974 respectivamente). En este marco, el artículo evalúa los alcances de las interpretaciones sobre el siglo XVII que propone Sarduy. Como hipótesis, se afirma que la mayor parte de estas interpretaciones están históricamente equivocadas o carecen de fundamentos documentales. Pero a la vez, y como segunda hipótesis, se propone que ese error es el fundamento desde el cual Sarduy compone su concepción anacrónica del neobarroco. A partir de una demostración de esa perspectiva, se elaboran reflexiones sobre el alcance de esa propuesta para comprender el siglo XVII y la actualidad.
