The comparison reveals that several fragments were removed or subtly edited.The paper argues that the differences between published and not-published versions show the Society’s aim to build an official narrative about the Japanese mission. Several tricky issues were omitted in that process. Two questions are posed and need development: what was put aside from the European readers’ eye? and why? En este artículo analizamos un corpus de tres cartas escritas por misioneros jesuitas desde Japón en 1562, editadas en la ciudad lusa de Évora en 1598. Comparamos, por un lado, las versiones publicadas y, por otro, los originales de las cartas, consultados en la edición crítica de Ruiz-de-Medina (1995). Constatamos que para la publicación de 1598, ciertos fragmentos de las misivas fueron recortados o modificados.Sostenemos que las diferencias entre las versiones indican la voluntad por parte de la Compañía de Jesús y el arzobispo Teotónio de Bragança (auspiciante de la edición) de construir una narrativa oficial sobre la presencia jesuita en Japón. En este proceso, ciertos asuntos eran deliberadamente puestos a un lado. Aquí indagaremos en cuáles eran esos asuntos, y porqué resultaba necesario omitirlos. Facultad de Filosofía y Humanidades.
