Fit of logspecies-logarea regression lines to nonequilibrium archipelagos: A simulation approach
In the past, significant positive slopes of logspecies-logarea lines were interpreted exclusively in the context of the equilibrium theory of island biogeography. A good fit to the regression model was given as evidence for equilibrium in species' richness. Here, I investigate whether or not a...

520 | 3 | |a In the past, significant positive slopes of logspecies-logarea lines were interpreted exclusively in the context of the equilibrium theory of island biogeography. A good fit to the regression model was given as evidence for equilibrium in species' richness. Here, I investigate whether or not a good fit to the linear version of the power function is frequently obtained in hypothetical nonequilibrium archipelagos with islands possessing species numbers below equilibrium. The proportions of positive significant logspecies-logarea regressions fitted to several archipelagos with randomly generated species' numbers are appreciably greater than zero (between ≈ 0.17 and 0.93) for a broad range of situations. When decreasing exponential and logistic colonization models were simulated, the probability of obtaining a significant positive slope approached one. The two models produce distinct predictions about the relationship between the slope of the logspecies-logarea line fitted to nonequilibrium archipelagos and the slope under equilibrium conditions. © 1989. |l eng | |
