The origin and development of transfusion therapy are revised, with biefly description of blood and plasma derivates or substitutes, and regarding to coagulation disorders or defficiences. Although blood components can transmit bacterial, parasitic and spirochetal illnesses, the major clinical problem from an infectious disease point of view is the transmission of viral illnesses: hepatitis or immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Despite several controls established, a risk for HIV or hepatitis transmission remains. Proposed guidelines for the development and renovation of this discipline are discussed in the article. |l eng | |
