The presence of GABA in ovarian, tubal and uterine rat tissue and the influence of estrogens

The presence of a high concentration of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in rat ovarian and Fallopian tissues has been recently reported. In this report, we investigated the presence of GABA in ovaries, oviducts and uteri obtained from rats in different stages of the sex cycle and from spayed animals....

In this report, we investigated the presence of GABA in ovaries, oviducts and uteri obtained from rats in different stages of the sex cycle and from spayed animals. Oophorectomy was performed 3 weeks before sacrifice. Some spayed rats were treated with 0.5 and 1.0 μg of estradiol 17-beta. GABA was assayed with a fluorometric procedure. Ovarian and oviductal GABA did not change during the sex cycle whereas uterine GABA (which was within the same range of that found in ovaries) decreased during metestrus and diestrus. In spayed animals receiving estradiol, uterine GABA increased significantly. The present findings demonstrate for the first time the presence of GABA in the rat uterus and its regulation by estrogens.  |l eng
