Field derivative of the variance of wavefront aberration

In this paper we expand the wavefront aberration function in terms of Zernike's polynomials. This expansion may be more convenient than the usual power series when the aberration variance is used as a merit function. Using normalized coordinates, we obtain a formula for the variance derivative,...

520 3 |a In this paper we expand the wavefront aberration function in terms of Zernike's polynomials. This expansion may be more convenient than the usual power series when the aberration variance is used as a merit function. Using normalized coordinates, we obtain a formula for the variance derivative, at an off-axis image point, with respect to displacements from this image point, when the exit pupil coordinates are kept constant. The derivative is obtained in terms of the data of rays traced for the given field point so that we are making greater profit from the rays traced. The calculation of both the variance and its field derivative is useful in the optimization of optical systems. © 1989 Taylor & Francis Ltd.  |l eng
