Investigation of the nonunique first-forbidden decay. I. Analysis of the 2-(0.962 MeV)2+ transition in Au198

A detailed study of the 0.962-MeV transition from the decay of Au198 is performed. A complete description of the theoretical formalism employed is given. Two sets of nuclear matrix elements have been extracted from the experimental data. In one of them the moment of multipolarity =2 is of the same o...

520 3 |a A detailed study of the 0.962-MeV transition from the decay of Au198 is performed. A complete description of the theoretical formalism employed is given. Two sets of nuclear matrix elements have been extracted from the experimental data. In one of them the moment of multipolarity =2 is of the same order of magnitude as those of multipolarities =0 and =1 and the ratio (=ir) is consistent with the Fujita-Eichler estimate [(FE)=2.4]. In the second case the moment of =2 is negligible and the ratio is strongly reduced with respect to (FE). A possible mechanism for the reduction of the moments from their single-particle values is discussed on the basis of a particle-plus-phonon coupling model. It is concluded that the state 2f52 is the dominant neutron single-particle configuration in the ground state of Au198. © 1973 The American Physical Society.  |l eng
