|a Migration crises often result from political, social, or economic imbalances that become evident and appear at all scales. The purpose of our work is to address some of the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic in Chubut, going through various aspects of daily life. Specifically, we will refer to the experiences of immobility experienced by Paraguayan workers harvesting rosehips in Argentina’s Andean region and in Chubut’s fisheries. The processes at work in our study intervened and transformed the territory in material and symbolic ways, for instance as when “others” were perceived and made invisible in a small street of a rural semi-public space; or in the sphere of affects, as in the case of the policy that required pharyngeal swabs testing from female prostitutes, due to their alleged links with migrant fishermen. In the prevailing context of the COVID-19 pandemic, migrant workers’ forced immobility became the rule due to the implementation of security measures generated by discourses criminalizing migrants: this resulted in greater restrictions on movement as well as the closing of borders, impacting them in ways that involved social change and displacement, during the pandemic’s period of stasis.
