Lingüística 20 Charles Peirce 1 Ciencias Sociales 1 Despite evidence on the benefits of mentoring with beginning teachers (Banegas, in press; Bao, 2021; Chan, 2020; Grassinger et al., 2010; Griffiths et al., 2020; Hobson et al., 2016; Lasater et al., 2021; Malderez, 2018; Mullen, 2021), little is known about the impact of mentoring on experienced teachers. Grounded in sociocultural theory (Johnson, 2006), the purpose of this study is to find out how the mentoring scheme we set up impacted the participating teachers' CPD. We explored the mentoring process from the mentees' point of view, addressed as "teachers" throughout this paper 1 Dictation 1 Enunciator 1 Future tense 1 Intense accent/Prominence 1 Intonational feature 1 Ironía 1 Linguistic variation 1 Locutor 1 Meaning 1 Perífrasis verbal 1 Phonemic transcriptions 1 Polyphony 1 Prosody 1 Revision stage 1 Semiótica 1 Significado 1 Speaker 1 The findings informed in this paper are part of an ongoing project about coherence and cohesion in casual conversation, under development at University of La Plata. In this study we analyze the 'communicative labour' done by speakers to contribute to the global coherence of the text. We focus on the strategies used by actors to co-construct coherence at episode boundaries (Linell, 1998; Korolija, 1998). The corpus comprises 52 audio or video-recorded dyadic and polyadic conversations among university students aged between 18 and 28, from different universities in Argentina. We agree with Linell (1998) and Korolija (1998) that participants in this kind of interaction -and analysts- assume that both parties cooperate in the process of building coherence. We adopt the concept of episode (Linell, 1998; Korolija, 1998), since it is appropri- ate for the fragmentation and analysis of the colloquial conversations under study, which consist of both 'chunks' and 'chat' segments (Eggins & Slade, 1997). The analysis reveals that speakers deploy a variety of strategies -which they combine according to their evaluation of shared knowledge- to offer cues to listeners that will help them establish the inter-episode relationships necessary to make sense of the text 1 This presentation is part of a research project about "Cohesion and coherence in casual conversation" that is being developed at the University of La Plata by the Group ECLAR (El Español de Chile y Argentina). The aim of this work is to analyze the meanings and functions of the expression "así" (like this) frequently used in informal talk, and to confirm or refute the hypothesis that it contributes to the cohesion of conversation in different ways. The corpus used is formed by 55 conversations between university students of 18 to 25 years of age, and who hold a close relationship among themselves in most cases. The principles of the Systemic Functional Linguistics were taken as a point of departure; descriptions of the meanings of the item in Spanish grammars and in writings about vague language also constituted basic bibliography. A local analysis of the occurrences of the term in context was carried out with the help of interpretation and comparison techniques. The results obtained showed that "asi" establishes internal references as much as external references in a text, in which case we would like to highlight the importance of the speaker`s assessment who, when choosing a form of expression, presupposes certain cognitive abilities of his interlocutor and a shared world with him. Besides finding occurrences of the item which fulfill functions already described in the literature on the subject -expressing consecutive meaning among other semantic values- this study revealed other functions that the item can perform in relation to the discourse values it can express, such as filler and marker of end of topic, among others, which can complement the existing descriptions 1 Tiempo futuro 1 Variación lingüística 1 Verbal periphrasis 1
