Sumario:From the variational principle for the total internal energy of a neutron star and some restrictions on the form of the metric coefficients, we have found equations of structure which are valid for every metric theory of gravitation. We also present some simple solutions of the structure equations to find the maximum mass of a neutron star. Finally we study this problem using a post post-Newtonian parametrization. © 1987 Società Italiana di Fisica.
