Sumario:The aim of this work was the delimitation of twelve species of the genus Ascobolus (Ascomycota, Pezizales) based on analysis of electrophoretic patterns of intracellular enzymes. Forty-seven monosporic strains and twenty-two mixed cultures of compatible strains of the genus were used and numerical techniques were applied. Six intracellular isozyme systems were analysed: aspartate aminotransferase, esterase, acid phosphatase, glutamate dehydrogenase, isocitrate dehydrogenase and superoxide dismutase. The phenograms obtained from cluster analysis (UPGMA) showed two groups of species, corresponding to the two sections of the genus (section Ascobolus and section Dasyobolus), with some differences within each section. Although high intraspecific homogeneity was observed species of Ascobolus exhibited no intraspecific variation for these enzyme systems with the exception of A. gamundiae and A. ferrugineus which were variable for esterase and acid phosphatase respectively. The results of this research allow us to establish that the twelve species studied are independent taxonomical entities.
