Sumario:The purpose of this paper is to provide some reflections about the problem of the common defense in Latin America within the framework of the South American Defense Council (known in Spanish as CDS) and the Union of South American Nations (in its Spanish acronym Unasur). The Council has set as priority goals the strengthening of Latin American unity and its consolidation as a region of peace. In order to achieve this, the CDS action plan addresses the need to develop a common strategic vision, something unthinkable until a few years ago when US dominance in military issues was absolute, with the exception of Cuba. The advent of popular governments in much of the region, over recent decades, enabled the construction of these inter-institutional spaces. However, the stagnation or decline of some of these governments, has led to some catastrophic tie -to use Alvaro Garcia Linera words- with social forces and neoliberal policies, which opens a scenario of strong disputes within these tools created for Latin American integration and to build defense strategies based on political, economic and social sovereignty.
