Se trata de una investigación cualitativa de nivel descriptivo, con un diseño de tipo fenomenológico. El estudio se realizó con una muestra constituida por 2 participantes con diagnóstico de cáncer, mayores de 18 años, en tratamiento en el Hospital San Bernardo. Se empleó como instrumento de investigación: entrevista individual semi-dirigida y la escala existencial de A. LÄngle – C. Orgler – M. Kundi. Los resultados obtenidos indican cuatro categorías que describen porque las participantes no logran expresar su realización existencial. Estas cuatro categorías son: el impacto y vivencia de la enfermedad, la enfermedad oncológica como sinónimo de muerte, el duelo de la enfermedad y el dinamismo de las capacidades existenciales. Esta última categoría guio las conclusiones finales en la que se determinó que las participantes de esta investigación no logran expresar su realización existencial. El dolor, la angustia, el miedo, la tristeza, el estrés que presentan las participantes, limitan su expresión existencial debido a que, se centran en sus intereses particulares dejándose gobernar por el cuerpo físico o por las condiciones psicológicas que presentan. Así sus capacidades existenciales: Autodistanciamiento, autotrascendencia y libertad, se encuentran restringidas limitando su manifestación al no poder establecer diálogo con el mundo, al haber dificultades en sus relaciones, en la falta de decisiones en sus vidas y pobre perfeccionamiento de sus potencialidades. Sin embargo, la capacidad existencial responsabilidad se encuentra plena en estos casos, ya que asumen un compromiso frente al tratamiento. The present study investigated the expression of existential fulfillment in adults undergoing treatment for their oncological disease at the Oncology Service of the San Bernardo Hospital. It is a qualitative research of descriptive level, with a phenomenological type design. The study was conducted with a sample consisting two participants diagnosed with cancer, both over 18 years old and in treatment at the San Bernardo Hospital. As research instruments there were used: semi-directed individual interview and the Existential Scale of A. Längle – C. Orgler- M.Kundi. The results obtained indicate four categories describing why the participants are unable to express their existential fulfillment, which are: the impact and experience of the disease, the oncological disease as a synonym of death, the mourning of the disease and the dynamism of the existential capacities. This last category guided the final conclusions, determinating that the participants of this investigation fail to express their existential fulfillment. The pain, anguish, fear, sadness, stress presented by the subjects limit their existential expression because they focus on their particular interests, allowing themselves to be governed by the physical body or by the psychological conditions they present. Thus, their existential capacities: self-distance, self-transcendence and freedom are restricted, limiting their manifestation as they are unable to establish a dialogue with the world, as there are difficulties in their relationships, in the lack of decisions in their lives and poor improvement of their potentialities. However, the existential capacity responsibility is full in these cases, since they assume a commitment to the treatment.
