Sumario:Nowadays behaviour and eating habits in children and adolescents could have an adverse effect upon their health. From all the meals taken throughout the day, the breakfast is the one that is frequently skipped. A complete breakfast gives aproximately 25% of the energy and nutrients requiered by the organism to cover its daily needs. It includes at least one selection from the dairy food group, one selection from the cereal food group and one from the fruit food group. A descriptive and transversal study has been conducted in order to know the breakfast eating habits and its nutritional quality in children and adolescents from 7 to 12 years old attending bilingual schools located in the Northern area of Gran Buenos Aires, (high income area). The percentage of children and adolescents that ate their breakfast the day of the survey was 94%. However only 5% consumed breakfast with a complete nutritional quality; 25% didn’t consume foods that belong to the dairy group; 20% didn’t include foods from the cereal group and 87% ommitted foods from the fruit group. Aproximately 20% ate other foods that don’t belong to the above mentioned groups. It is important to emphasize what a nutritional quality breakfast is about as well as to encourage breakfast as an important meal. The food selection is not only determined by the availability and accessibility, but also by the learnt preferences. All the actions of eating habits education addressed to children and adolescents, in a didactic, 4 interactive and stimulating way are effective strategies to encourage positive attitudes that will allow them, according to their capacities, to responsably choose the foods they consume.
