Sumario:Public municipal markets must opt for the planning and the implementation of comprehensive changes if they are to meet consumers’ needs and expectations, while remaining competing with other commercial formats. The importance of public municipal markets or retail markets lies in the fact that they not only fulfill economic functions but social, cultural, urban planning and community identity functions, among others, besides. The Benito Juárez Market in Ciudad Ixtepec, Oaxaca, Mexico faces complex, internal conflicts and an increasingly-competitive retail environment. For these reasons the public municipal market´s ability to offer a wide range of good-quality,competitively-priced basic consumer goods and to compete with other retail outlets is reduced. The study spans the period 2009 -2010. This phase is of particular interest because new shopping centres were opened. The new businesses show significant differences between the municipal market and the new forms of trade.
