Sumario:Adolescence is an important stage in the growth and development of the person. Habits and behaviors that begin at this stage will be set for adult life. Objective: To describe and compare the nutritional status of adolescents in the fourth and fifth year between a public school and a private school by anthropometry and dietary surveys. Materials and methods: A comparative study was carried out with two independent samples. The design was observational, prospective and cross. We conducted a non-probability sampling accidentally in each of the schools. Both samples were weighed and nutritional information was recollected with a questionnaire on eating habits and a 24-hour dietary- recall of the previous day's meals . Results: We obtained two independent samples of 30 students each. The 20% of private school students showed levels of BMI/E for overweight. The 20% of public school students also showed levels of overweight and 6,7% showed levels of obesity. There were significant differences between schools in the number of times students made meals outside the home, being more in the public school. This also occurred in the frequency of consumption of fast foods and fried foods. We obtained a higher average value of energy and carbohydrates intake at school public than in the private, these differences were statistically significant. Conclusion: No significant differences in the percentage of adolescents who are overweight and obesity by anthropometry between the two schools. However, if there were some significant differences related to certain dietary patterns associated with risk of developing overweight and obesity were more negative among public school students. Changes in lifestyles that promote increased consumption of fast foods and reduced physical activity are the main habits by which overweight and obesity are a problem of global health, particularly in these schools, could be taken as a starting point to develop appropriate and timely interventions.
