The poem exposes the fragile equilibrium in the exercise of power concerning the environment and population and evaluates the actions taken by the local agents during the Arauco wars. In this context, the city receives a protagonist role and can be read as a device of governmentality on the southern borderline of the Spanish colonial empire in America. El presente artículo propone el análisis de algunas referencias a la ciudad en el Purén indómito, pieza de la poesía épica colonial de principios del siglo XVII atribuida a Diego Arias de Saavedra. El poema expone el frágil equilibrio en el ejercicio de poder concerniente al medio y población y evalúa las acciones tomadas por los agentes locales durante las guerras de Arauco. En este contexto, la ciudad recibe un lugar protagonista y puede ser leída como un dispositivo de gubernamentalidad en la frontera sur del Imperio colonial español en América. Este artigo propõe uma análise de algumas referências sob a cidade no Purén indómito, peça da poesia épica colonial no início do século XVII atribuída ao Diego Arias de Saavedra. O poema expõe o frágil equilíbrio no exercício de poder relativo ao meio e população e avalia as ações tomadas pelos agentes locais durante as guerras de Arauco. Neste contexto, a cidade recebe um papel protagonista e pode ser lida como um dispositivo de governamentalidade na fronteira sul do Império colonial espanhol na América.
