Such works included the creation of schools and promoted a discourse of "progress", but exercised a constant and irritating fiscal pressure and threatened the internal hierarchy of the Indian towns. Indian resistance became stronger and stronger, and led to friction and violence, as well as the appearance of mesianic Indian figures who appear to underscore the desire to restore the autonomy which was being lost: It was the autonomy and not conflict for the land itself, which constituted the key problem in the communities. Within an atmosphere marked by ancient resentments but reinforced by new frictions, ... La reacción de los pueblso indígenas de Los Altos de Guatemala a la política social del régimen conservador de Rafael Carrera, particularmente a lo largo de la década de los años cincuenta del siglo XIX, permite establecer que dicha política continuó el proyecto liberal anterior de incluir a los indígenas en la vida cívica de la República mediante la realización de obras públicas diversas en sus pueblos. Tales obras incluyeron la creación de escuelas y promovieron un discurso de "progreso", pero ejercieron una constante e irritante presión fiscal y amenazaron el mando interno de los pueblos. La resistencia indígena se hizo cada vez más fuerte, y desembocó en piques y violencia, no menos que en la aparición de figuras mesiánicas indígenas que parecen marcar con aún mayor contundencia el deseo de restaurar la autonomía que se perdía. Essas obras incluíam a criação de escolas e promoviam um discurso de "progresso", mas exerciam uma pressão fiscal constante e irritante e ameaçavam o controle interno das aldeias. A resistência indígena tornou-se cada vez mais forte, culminando em conflitos e violência, principalmente no surgimento de figuras messiânicas indígenas que parecem enfatizar ainda mais fortemente o desejo de restaurar a autonomia que estava sendo perdida.
