| Sumario: | Between the first illusions and the material realisation, the article seeks to restore the place occupied by the Biblioteca Pública de la Provincia de Buenos Aires in the foundational program of La Plata. First, there is an account of the ideas and intentions that led to the creation of a public library project that, although inherited the model born in 1810, represented a conceptual renewal without precedent in Argentine history. Secondly, the interventions and conditions of possibility that, between 1884 and 1898, determined the actual design of the library are recovered and contextualised. Finally, it is concluded that during the period under study, the public library was laying the genetic foundations for a project that it could not fully develop.
