Sumario:Research on eighteenth-century music in Portugal has focused mainly on Lisbon, carefully analysing its practices, collections and agents. This trend, which produced very relevant results, has operated to the detriment of the study of other Portuguese territories, usually considered passive recipients of the phenomena that have arisen in the capital. The objective of this paper is to contribute to an improvement of the situation, dealing with the heterogeneity of the manifestations of northern Portugal that can be included under the expression “salon music”. At the same time, it is intended to show the problems that a restrictive consideration of this academic label would entail in relation to this location at the end of the Ancien Régime. All of this represents a methodological challenge due not only to the dispersion (sometimes scarcity) of sources, but also because the issue has not been treated holistically until now. The paper reveals the continuous interaction between northern halls and other areas with a musical presence, such as theatres and churches, often diluting the borders that separated them. Furthermore, although the Lisbon influence in this entire process is undeniable, reducing what happened to simple center-periphery dynamics does not correspond exactly to the complex reality.
