Remembering that brief history prior to the “revolución martinfierrista” can help us understand, on this side idolatry, the deceptive foundational epic of the avant-garde ruptures. En “El tamaño de mi esperanza” (1926) Borges realizó un rápido balance de lo que habían hecho hasta entonces los argentinos en materia de literatura. El resultado era tan pobre que Borges podía creer que prácticamente todo estaba por hacerse. Una “esencial pobreza” bien podía ser una oportunidad y una esperanza. Antes de que la generación de Borges se iniciara, sin embargo, tres generaciones ya se habían definido a sí mismas con esa significativa etiqueta formada por tres palabras: “nueva generación literaria”. Recordar esa breve historia previa a la “revolución martinfierrista” puede ayudarnos a comprender, on this side idolatry, la engañosa épica fundacional de las rupturas vanguardistas.
