Sumario:This article is part of ethnographic research that seeks to contribute to the understan- ding of the modalities of protection of children considered “at risk”. Based on fieldwork conducted in a state agency for the protection and restitution of children’s rights, it analyzes the modalities of intervention on this population and their families, in a midsized locality of the province of Buenos Aires. The paper focuses on the dilemmatic scenarios that shape the translation of the language of rights into concrete interventions carried out by state agents. It is argued that the meanings assigned to child protection, mainly associated to notions such as consensus, voluntariness and family responsibility, are put under strain in concrete and situated practice by resignifying the language of rights in the interaction between families and the State
