Taking as a point of departure the multiple forms of violence, I mean, not only those related to sexual and physical assaults but also those invisible and silent forms -like political, symbolic and structural violences-, the concept of trauma becomes a notion that throws light on specific kinds of social suffering. However, the psycosocial perspective that has dominated the research on trauma, does have restrictions tied up with privatization, medicalization and normatizations processes implied in the posttraumatic stress disorder definition (PTSD). The objective of this article consists in discuss the notions of trauma and traumatic experiences, their relations to diverse kinds of violences and their potential for the study of social suffering among injector drug users. Finally, this perspective is applied to the data collected during the ethnography study carried out in "the Mission" neighborhood, San Francisco, U.S (from 1999 to 2000). El trauma, las experiencias traumáticas, y sus consecuencias en los cuerpos sociales e individuales se han tranformado en conceptos centrales de las discusiones antropológicas actuales sobre la violencia y el sufrimiento social. Tomando como punto de partida las múltiples formas de violencia, es decir, o sólo las formas físicas y/o sexuales sino aquellas otras formas más silenciosas e invisibles como son las violencias políticas, estructurales y simbólicas, la noción de trauma se convierte en un concepto que ilumina formas específicas de sufrimiento social. Sin embargo, la perspectiva psico-social que domina el análisis del trauma presenta limitaciones ligadas a los procesos de privatización, medicalización y normatización supuestos en la definición del trastorno del stress postraumático(PTSD). El objetivo de este trabajo es discutir las nociones de trauma y experiencia traumática, sus relaciones con las diversas clases de violencia y sus pontecialidades para el estudio del sufrimiento social entre usuarios de drogas por vía inyectable. Finalmente, esta perspectiva se aplica en los datos provenientes de la etnografía llevada a cabo durante dos años con usuarios de droga en el Barrio “La Misión" de San Francisco, Estados Unidos.
