Sumario:This study focuses on the process of exiting an alternative-care facility, a process that comprises the period prior to the departure, the departure itself, and the post-departure experience. Based on anthropological and ethnographic analysis, the article observes the approaches and differences identified in the institutional transition process of young people exiting care in the city of Porto Alegre, in Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) and in the Autonomous Capital of Buenos Aires (Argentina). The comparison enables us to identify how, in relation to practices and meanings, the observed institutions construct ideas around the concepts of “independence and autonomy” of the young people in care, as well as their implications for the care-leavers ´preparation. By assessing the presence of these categories in normative guidelines, institutional and organizational practices, we focus on their ethical-political nature, encouraging a critical view of the structural conditions in which they take place.
