| Sumario: | This article analyzes the parliamentary debate that preceded the promulgation of the law of General Reform that affected the Catholic Church in Buenos Aires in 1822. The study focuses both on the continuity of the religious policy of the Spanish Monarchy, and the novelties introduced by the Independent government. These novelties help illuminate the reason why the government and the Parliament promoted a reform that somehow threatened the consensus that characterized the so-called "happy expcrience".The vast majority of the historians who have studied the problem concentrated on Minister Bernardino Rivadavia. Isnted, this article emphaizes the role of the clergy in the design of the reform. |
