Sumario:In the present study we will analyze the systems of dependency between the wealthiest inhabitants of local communities, also called rural elites, and their laborers in Leon during the High Middle Ages. We will examine practices of dependency and their relation with the social and economic differences found in Leonese communities through the study of local by-laws (fueros) and charters from ecclesiastical archives. Then, we will question the role played by these “sub-dependency” relations within local communities and their inclusion in royal, lay or ecclesiastical lordship. This study will allow us to observe the intersection of different labour- exploitation practices, and the economic inequality within communities, contributing towards a better comprehension of the complexity of the medieval society.
